Five new Canon large format printers have been developed to deliver optimum image quality and colour management for the photographic, fine arts, proofing, signage and production markets.

The new models use LUCIA EX inks, making Canon the only company to use a single ink set across an entire large format range. The ink set provides a wider colour gamut, more expressive blacks, better scratch resistance and more stable colour for optimum image quality. They also feature ‘hot swap’ technology, making it possible to replace ink cartridges whilst printing, providing uninterrupted production and reducing down time.

The 24-inch, 12-colour imagePROGRAF iPF6400 and imagePROGRAF iPF6450, the latter of which features a 250GB internal hard disk drive, replace the iPF6300 and iPF6350 models respectively. The imagePROGRAF range is further enhanced by the 44-inch 12-colour imagePROGRAF iPF8400, which features an internal HDD of 250GB. The range’s other new additions are the 60-inch 12-colour imagePROGRAF iPF9400 and the 60-inch 8-colour imagePROGRAF iPF9400S. Overall image quality is improved by using LUCIA-EX inks which provide an approximately 20% wider colour gamut, and the fast printing speed will appeal to the photographic, fine arts and in-house signage markets.

A new spectrophotometer – optional with the imagePROGRAF iPF6450 – enables precise, highly stable and consistent colour, and has a switchable UV filter to give users greater flexibility with their range of media. A calibration link allows the spectrophotometer to provide a unified solution to all of Canon’s new 12-colour large format printers. Needing only to be installed on the iPF6450 at one location, users can centrally control the colour management of multiple imagePROGRAF units in other sites, optimising output and ensuring uniformity of colour.

The imagePROGRAF iPF6450 with optional spectrophotometer was named as BLI’s Winter ‘Pick’ for ‘Outstanding Small Workgroup Colour Inkjet Wide Format Graphics Printer’. Following rigorous testing of a fleet of imagePROGRAF printers using the iPF6450 together with the spectrophotometer, Canon was commended for its ‘impressive’ colour consistency across multiple devices. Canon was also awarded for ‘Outstanding Achievement In Innovation’ by the BLI, recognising the easy implementation of the spectrophotometer and the high-quality results of its colour management capabilities.

Canon has also developed a Photoshop Plug-In to include a layout function with automated size adjustment, ideal for gallery wraps. In addition, the accounting, media configuration and calibration software that is bundled with the new models has been upgraded to give users the flexibility and usability to create, monitor and deliver all of their printing jobs to exact specifications.
